As we bid farewell to 2023, no doubt we will be hopeful that 2024 brings joy and happiness for us and for our family and loved ones. We will seek to make a New Year’s resolution to fundamentally be constantly happy.
However, circumstances bring both happy moments as well as sad moments and thus despite our best intentions, we will become depressed during unfavourable times and overly happy during favourable ones.
What if however, in spite of circumstances in our worldly lives, we were able to attain inner bliss? This key lies in maintaining a state of equanimity.
Param Pujya Dada Bhagwan, an enlightened being and founder of Akram Vignan, the spiritual science says that, “Equanimity is when abhorrence does not arise during the circumstances of abhorrence and attachment does not arise during the circumstances of attachment.”
Thus, even if we do not achieve or get what we want, we should not be unhappy or complain and refrain from seeing the faults of others. Similarly, when all favourable circumstances occur, we need not be overly happy, but rather we should remain equanimous during both scenarios.
Similarly, we should react with equanimity towards those who love or insult us, treating them equally. Even if we react adverse towards someone whom we feel has behaved in an insulting manner, our intent should be to repent.
Param Pujya Dada Bhagwan further explains that, “It is considered equanimity when attachment does not arise towards someone who offers flowers and abhorrence does not arise towards someone who is pelting stones.”
So, let us all make a resolution for 2024, that irrespective of how favourable or unfavourable our outer circumstances are, we will stay equanimous from within, in all situations!
